ABOUT

Over the past 80 years the study and research in Tropical Medicine have contributed to one of the most important downfalls of mortality rates in the world (in Brazil this index fell from 50% to 5% during this period).

Despite this significant drop, many of these diseases are still present and active, requiring constant maintenance of these efforts, especially directed to the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of these diseases. If before we were operating to avoid death, today our focus is to ensure the quality of life of populations and travellers.

Thus, the current Tropical Medicine also includes International or Global health aspects, ensuring that products or people of particular region are not foci of disease transmission; even if your visitors are victims of local pathologies.

In this context, the Institute for Tropical Medicine (IMT) has been working since its founding in 1959-1960. After 40 years of activity linked to the Faculty of medicine-USP became a specialized Institute of USP (IMT-USP), associating the character a USP IE Integrator to full expression of our main purposes geared to teaching, research and training of experts in the field of Tropical Diseases and International Health.

Besides own research projects, IMT-USP has unique and very important participation in the dialogue between what is developed in Basic research institutes of the University of São Paulo with the process of practical application in society. In other words the IMT-USP can communicate both with the basic researchers, as with doctors who work in hospitals.

The impact of this interaction results often in collaboration and interaction with health authorities in order to deploy and/or reformulate public policies for health and for the welfare of society. So, in addition to developing research that generates knowledge, IMT-USP has been firming as a training centre, and improvement of specialised services in the area.

Thus, IMT-USP has a graduate program in Tropical Medicine and International Health, has contributed with its own undergraduate disciplines in the courses of the Faculty of public health (FSP-USP) and ECA, in addition to giving a regular course on travellers ' Health extension to the external community. The Biosafety Committee and the IMT-CIPA USP Act in matters of health, safety at work and quality of life.
